The Mysteries Procession
The Mysteries Procession takes place in Trapani on Holy Friday from 14.00 until the next day, so it lastes 24 hours. Twenty Sacred groups run across the main streets of the historic center of Trapani, describing the Passion and Death of Christ. All the event happens in a show of lights, sounds, colors and emotions.
It is the longest and one of the oldest Italian religious events: it is a tradition marked by the Spanish origins which represents itself from about 400 years.
The sculptures, made by local craftsmen in the XVII century, stand on a wooden shape called Vara, and they represent evangelical scenes. The technique of realization consisted in carving the faces, the hands and the feet in the wood. Internally the sculptures are supported by structures of cork; the clothes adapt to it because they were dipped in a mix of glue and plaster, so allowing a more natural plasticity of expressions, according to a typically sicilian technique called carchèt.
